Adding or embedding video on your webpage

Elementor and WordPress allow us to add or embed videos to our webpages. This gives us the opportunity to add media that supports the content of the page.

Videos shouldn’t be used to replace content on the page. If there is essential information, it should be available as text accompanying the video.

Add video to your page

Both the Video and YouTube elements will allow you to add videos to the page. These can be locally sourced videos or ones hosted online (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo).

When configuring the video:

• keep autoplay and loop off,
• keep player controls available,
• use an appropriate thumbnail or image overlay when needed, and
• check the player on desktop, tablet and mobile.

Avoid embedding several videos on one page when links or a dedicated media collection would provide a better experience.

Use an approved video source

Because upload file sizes are limited, videos should be hosted on a streaming platform and embed on the page.

Recommended video hosting platforms

• YouTube
• Vimeo
• Teaching & Learning media portal (this doesn’t work well with the Video element, but can still be linked to from the page)

Before embedding, confirm that:

• the video is approved for public use,
• copyright and consent requirements have been addressed, and
• sharing permissions allow the intended audience to view it.

Make the video accessible

Ensure video content includes accurate captions.

• Review automatically generated captions for names, technical terms, punctuation, timing and important non-speech audio.
• Important visual information that is not communicated through the audio must also have an accessible alternative.
• Captions must be prepared and reviewed on the hosting platform.
